ok guys i may need to buy a new engine soon

and have foudn what appears to be a low km xr6vct engine
for a good price

how hard is it to make the damn thign run on a non vct car?

would i need the ecu?
or can i just get an oil pressure switch for the vct >

Daynesy- 02-04-2009
I think you need the ECU to run it. Either the ECU that relates to the VCT engine, or an aftermarket. Same as when the few people have put the BA motor into an EF. But as its still an AU motor, it could be different. Someone else may have more knowledge.

yer im thinking the ecu and the bit for the switch for the vct.. as it is run via oilpressure

i MAY be ok as i have just helicoiled the sump

not sure how a helicoil of a helicoil will go ( someone had helicoiled it before i got the car

A mate of mine has a XR6 VCT motor in his shitter wagon. From what i can tell it was pretty simple. Im not sure on the wiring (need an extra plug for the VCT actuator) or the extra oil line/s.

You will need the ECU. Make sure its got the same security system as your own car (EG smart lock or smart sheild.) thats where my mate ran into trouble.

ya cheers chris!

cheers for the reminder of the smartlock/smartsheild ecu
forgot abotu that!

will see how it goes over the next few weeks

waiting on falcon speacilist to get back to me on a price
i dont trust the under 110kms from wally wreckers

Wallistons always have a few sitting there as the VCT's arent that desirable.

So i wouldnt be suprised if it was low kays but always pays to check and shop around.

mmok cheers

how can u check on low kms with an engine sitting on teh floor

cant do a comp test or anything

Tapper21- 02-05-2009
from my personal experience I trust wallistons wreckers, I was sold what they said was a low km el xr6 engine, and I was a little worried.........until the first time i redlined it and heard it sing, great engine, coudn't be in better condition if it was straight from the factory, not a drop of oil burnt or leaked yet. The only reason I didn't buy one of the vct engines from them is becuase I was told they are very thirsty. The only complaint I had was that they were a little unorganised and it took a few weeks for them to get the engine sent round to kalamunda performance. If I had taken the engine when i bought it though it would've been all smooth sailing

if ya XR is a series1 which i recall is, should be fine if you can get a smartlock ecu to suit. otherwise your up shit creek with smartshield stuff, you ll need to match the BEM and ECU as a pair, not just a matter of swapping ecus with them.

Frank i thought you live near pete???? lol

Disco Frank- 02-05-2009
yes i do live near pete smile.gif he hates i6 sad.gif
and yes s1 xr6

so if i change the ecu i need a bem to match

iirc ford need to code them... not like the e series

i could be wrong

skitzophreNic- 02-05-2009
well since the series1 was smart lock im hoping you wouldnt have to re-code it with the bem, un saying that i think the only diff with the two systems is obvious a more complex code to enable the ecu, so maybe all AUs are the same, just the transponder key was the only difference for smart shield

need pete to clear this up lol

oh and what you mean he hate's L6, its still a ford isnt it?
