OK I hope this makes sense. After fitting a second hand trip computer (my clock wasn't working) the car wound over very slowly and did the click/click noise on the starter motor, must have dragged to much power had to reset the clock, so to be sure I went through the ECU reset procedure. Now the auto is changing strangley hesitating into and out of first, changing into third to quickly and generaly slipping through gears when I put my foot down at all. I have since disconnected the trip computer and test driven no improvement, disconnected the Eliminator chip and test driven no improvement, checked and redone all earth's no improvement, checked the fault codes only got 511 ECU failure which I have had for as long as I can remember. The auto was working perfectly before this, battery is only a year old and fully charged I have exhasted my process of elimination any one got any idea's.

It maybe totally unrelated to the work you have just done. ( I have seen stranger things). Give the guys at Auto Trans R Us a call in Os Park. 9242 7221

Just noticed this, is your car still doing it? If it happened straight after you changed/fitted electrical things and was perfect before, probly goin to be an elec fault some where in the system, epecially if its not changing back a gear.

Check your gear selector switch, its a plug on the left hand side of the gear box (same plug the injectors use, bosch style) these a prone to coming off, or mite be damaged.

Thanks guy's, Still playing up, have unplugged and cleaned all auto connections. I am trying to borrow or get a cheap EF Auto ECU to eliminate or solve the problem. I have talked to a local auto place and the local Ford dealer and neither of them had any suggestions other than an electrical fault. I will give the boys at Auto Trans R Us a call during the week and see if they can help.

I had a weird fault in an EB falcon. It used to cut out at 2700rpm so abruptly that it broke a clutch. After many visit's to Ford and fitting a new computer it still did it.Eventually I found an auto electrician that knew what it was. When I put a new battery in the car the front wheels weren't facing exactly straight and this was causing the computer to malfunction.Apparently there is a program in the software that is to do with which way the wheels are pointing,Very strange I know but it happened. We faced the wheels dead straight and disconnected the battery.Left it for an hour hooked it back up and it never did it again.

I wonder where the sensor is for the wheels being straight, because my steering wheel is not central when driving so when I park the steering wheel is not central. Its worth a go foz I've tried heaps of other things.

Just disconnected the battery and reset the computer with the steering wheel in the straight position and still the same. Just won a 4TBD Tickford Fairmont Ghia ECU on E-Bay for $60.50 inc postage, so when it arrives and is fitted hopefully the problem will be solved.

It was worth a try.Mine being a manual it probably has a different computer. It was a very frustrating and expensive procces trying to track it down.Hope you get it sorted soon.

Just fitted the 4TBD ECU and the problem is still there, Time to start talking to people who know automatics. The problem has changed
(before I fitted the other ECU) previously the box would hesitate into, through and out of first and change quickly into third, now it holds first until I back of and then it changes to second, I cant even feel the change to third and it wont change to fourth. How does changing a trip computer cause this much crap.
