Hey does anyone know about Crane Hi-6 ignition systems.Mine seems to of had a brain fade.Have no power at the coil but the LED light on the side of the ignition box is still working.Do they have a reset or something similar. Cheers Don

im running a crane hi6 aswell, are you running an LX series coil with it? Or another coil? If you have no power at the coil could it be the coil that has ate s***? Also can you check continuity on the wiring to the coil to see if the wiring itself is at fault? I am pretty sure they do not have a reset feature.. try disconnecting it from the battery and then pwoering it up again?

Yep I thought it was the coil so I put a new one on it.LX92 high performance coil but it still won't start. As far as I can tell all the wiring is intact so it may be either the Dissy or the brain.Either way it is proving hard to find.

Gidday Foz,
Check out the attached link for the user manual on the Hi-6 ignition.
www.cranecams.com/pdf/90006462b.pdf
Page 9 covers fault finding for this unit.
From my personal experience I would be checking that the status LED is blinking when you crank the engine over. If it doesn't it could mean one of 3 things:
A. Your distributor is at fault
B. The wiring between the distributor and the HI-6 module is at fault. This can be checked by disconnecting the 2 wires going to the HI-6 module from the distributor and then shorting them out with a length of insualted wire. Every time you remove and re-apply the short, the status LED should change. If this step gets your LED blinking then look at step A. above.
C. Assuming you find no wiring fault in step B above and the status LED does not blink when the wires are shorted, then I would guess that your HI-6 module may require repair.
If the status LED blinks fine when cranking / shorting, then it would tend to suggest that the output circuit of the HI-6 may be faulty (particularly since you have tried a new coil).
Check the usual suspects though i.e HT lead from coil to distributor and all earthing points as per user manual.
Hope the info helps !

Thanks mate.I know the LED doesn't blink when I crank it so I will try your wire suggestion and see if I can narrow it down a bit.

I tried the wire trick but got no result.I then left the dizzy unplugged and took the white points wire which is not in use as my dizzy is magnetically triggered and shorted it to earth. The LED blinked so this means the magnetic pickups are faulty but the good news is the Crane Hi-6 is OK.Now I have to either clean or replace the magnetic pick ups. Yay!!!!

Foz,
Sounds like you are on a winner !
Shouldn't be too hard to track down a new pickup for the dizzy.
I reckon you'd be hanging out to get her running and go cruising again
Let us know how you go !

Hopefully have it running this weekend.Been a real pain in the a***

Unfortunately the car is still not going.I tried cleaning the magnets but still no go.I guess the next step is to take the whole dizzy to the guy who built the engine and see if he can fix it.BUGGER!!!!!

argh that sucks the big one

Pulled the dizzy out today.I put a multi-meter on the two wires coming from the magnetic trigger and it has a dead short.I'm no electrician but I'm hoping this is what is causing the drama.Hopefully if I replace the unit the car will finally start.Man it is going to get a flogging!!!

Spoke to the guy who built my engine today coz he has my dizzy. He checked it by hand (not sure what that entails) and it seemed OK so he put it in an engine on a dyno and it wouldn't work.He is replacing the magnetic pick up and I should have it in and running by the weekend. If only I had an engine dyno in the shed I may of found the problem.

YAY!!!!! Great to hear Foz.

The Dizzy has been reajusted.Apparently they are non-adjustable but do get sloppy after a while so it was reset and cleaned as it had a bit of surface rust on the pickup.Apparently the rust is commom as moisture gets into the dizzy. It was put in an engine and run on the dyno so YAY!!!!! Pick it up tomorrow and fingers crossed the beast will fire up.

good stuff mate so dyno day here we come!!!!!
