hey guys, having a problem with my ute sad.gif so close to the cruise too, hope i can suss it out.

ok heres what happened i drive to and from collie every day for work (around about 70kms each way to the power station) for the last week ive driven my ute, no problems.

today when i get home and put it into park, i notice its idling a tad high, temperature was normal (about 2 bars) no biggie, turn it off and go inside.

About an hour later i start up the ute to head to a friends place and as soon as i start the ute its idling absolutely through the roof, like screaming revs. im like "golly gosh" and drop it into reverse to see if revs drop, with my foot on the brake and not on the accelerator it breaks traction and starts smoking up the tyres in my driveway. within about 3 minutes of the car running i notice the temp guage is maxed out, i immediately turned the car off (in gear) and it did the shuddering pre ignition thing for a bit then died. i pop the bonnet and notice the washer bottle hose has melted from the heat o.O

left the car off with the bonnet up in my backyard to cool down. took another car to friends place, came home an hour or so later, engine is still warm, radiator is pretty much full, plenty of oil etc etc, no busted hoses as far as i can tell, throttle mechanism on the carby moves freely. i started the car up again and it blew a little smoke for a bit (i think a bluey colour, it was dark by then) idled a little bit high, guessing around 900-1100 rpm revs drop again when in gear, temp seems normal. not game to take it for a drive incase it happens again.

soooo, any ideas guys?

cheers, lewis

by the way, its a 351, holley 600, running on premium unleaded with a valve saver drip bottle thing, just ask for more specific details, motor is stock apart from new rocker covers and air cleaner.

I'm no mechanic mate but I did have a similar problem once. The roll pin on the bottom of my dizzy had sheared so the timing kept going out.Check the timing if you can and if need be pull out the dizzy and have a look.Just make a mark on thr dizzy and block so you can drop it back in the same place.

Could even be a Carby Spring that has lost its springyness.

but would a dizzy allow the timing to advance that much? i thought it was limited to a rev range from retard->idle->advance.

a couple other suggestions ive had would be thermostat sticking closed hence massive temp so quick and possibly sticking/fuxxored accelerator cable hence massive revs without actually touching the accelerator?

im lost. gunna check out these things plus your guys suggestions tomorrow after work, if they dont fix it then ill take it to the mechanics on thursday morn.

i NEED it for friday night/weekend so it has to be fixed either way sad.gif
