Hey everyone,

I was over in Melbourne recently and bought myself a XC ute with a 4 spd top loader. I drove it to the dock myself to avoid any dramas with transport, but when the transport company tried to load it onto the ship to bring it back to me, the gearbox got stuck in reverse.

So my dilema is that I am back in Perth and my car is sitting on a dock in Melbourne and the transport company wants nothing to do with it.

Does anyone know of a mobile mechanic in Melbourne that could get the old girl back on her feet and ready for transport?

I think it is just a case of the linkage being stuck in reverse and assume it can be remedied by jacking the car up. It is also very low which makes it impossible to assess without lifting it up.

Any tips that anyone has would be much appreciated. As you can imagine I would just like to see her sitting safely in my garage.

When they get stuck in reverse it's usually just a case of sticking it in 3rd to free it up.If that doesn't work you have to get under the car and flick the linkage free with a screwdriver.Not much help i know if the guys on the dock won't touch it.See if they will try and put it in third gear.They need to hold pressure against the spring when coming out of reverse by pushing it towards the passenger door as that is what causes worn linkages to stick.

shifter may be warn and selected 1st and reverse did lock up mine before the rebuild had to rock the car back and forward and pop went the neutral.

may be sightly different being a hurst shifter but may help with describing which leaver to move.

get the idea anyway even though linkages may look different being aftermarket shifter.


all else fails could pull tailshaft and wire up and give us a call when it arives come down have a look at the freight yard.

get them to reverse it up on the trailer

to many girly men over Melbourne cant work a top loader

must be case of stuck in 2 gears otherwise thay could clutch it in push it on the trailer.
warn or bent rod may of pushed one the other rods over.

must be so annoying being over there not being able to help I feel your pain.

i ENDED UP JUST PAYING A TRANSPORT COMPANY TO MOVE IT AS IT IS.

SHOULD BE HERE BY THE END OF THE MONTH.

Jeezus that's risky...transport companies usually f*** everything they touch even if it's easy to move!?!
