Greets all, not sure how to proceed with this issue on the Ute but here goes.

Went to start the car the other day and turned the key, it felt like everything was spinning except the motor , carefully went through the motions again and the basically the drive belt spins around as it tries to fire but it feels like that the motor itself ie pistons, flywheel etc are not turning over continued to try to start for a few more minutes eventually the "grabbed" and fire over only to sound like it was being choked, rough idle alot of shaking etc, then after 5 minutes of doing that it slowly worked itself up to being fine and after a continuous start stop it hasnt recreated the problem.

Has anyone had this issue with there's? Not a good sign for a car that is 4 years old and has only done 44 thousand kays.

Hopefully it was a one off.

VCT???

Could it posiibley have been the cams not spining causing no compresiion?

danc666- 07-06-2008
mine did something like that, it was very hard to start and when it did it was like the cams were out of sync or the leads were on the wrong plugs. It only happened once and for that i am glad!!

Get a service on it, possibly coil packs or maybe something like fuel pump or something similar.

Cool will investigate next service will keep you all posted on the outcome.

skitzophreNic- 07-07-2008
Yes please do, this is soo strange, especially cause you said it just spun over soo freely with out compression!

Were you goin to take it? Ford i suppose.

Get ford to check if the car has logged any error codes. All BA's will not start also if you have the throttle depressed, I've heard of the electronic throttle sticking open and making the car refuse to start. Doesn't quite sound like what's happened here though. Have you picked up any dodgy fuel lately.. maybe try changing the filter too and blowing out the old one to get an idea of any crap in the system.

66coupe- 07-07-2008
Ba's do that occasionally, usually when they are flooded.
If you leave them sit for a while, they will generally start, otherwise you can remove the fuel pump fuse and kick it over and it will come good.

I didn't know that an engine with no carbie could get flooded?? wacko.gif

certainly do, i only found this out last weekend whilst 'trying' to do a burnout and a.b.s was holding me back! and also if the belt is spinning the engine is turning over so the starting system would be in good order.

Easier way to do that is just put your foot flat to the floor and try starting it. The computer won't let the car start if you have WOT applied and it will just sit there and crank. Good way to get oil around your engine and in the filter too after a fresh oil change.

66coupe- 07-10-2008
with the BA's sometimes the ECU will go a bit haywire and flood the engine, in some instances even holding the accelerator to the floor wont clear it, as it keeps pumping fuel, thats why you need to pull the fuel pump fuse.

Carby's arent the only things that flood - Computers sometimes do play up, theyre not 100% reliable...

I too have had a problem with my 03 XR6T Its only every now and then seems to be when left sitting a couple of days. Starts ok but by the time I reverse out of the garage and put it in neutral to get out and close the gate it runs like an old V8 on 3 Cylinders (only way to describe it!) wont rev at all only way to correct it is turn it off and start it again. Ford have no Idea why it does it, havent heard of any other one doing it. At one stage they replaced the Throttle position sensor but it still did it after that, they then said the throttle body was faulty replaced it again still doing it. No code errors come up for the problem and the last thing they wanted me to do was leave the car for a week in the hands of their head mechanic to take home and drive to work everyday and see if it did it. Considered this for a split second only and said no way I've seen the way those guys drive other ppls cars. So at this stage it is just deal with it if it happens. luv to hear if anyone else has had the same prob. TTFN

Took it down to Ford and they gave it the big once over , No error codes as such and they couldnt shed anylight on the matter (as I expected) . But then again i did question the how good the said mechanic was at the dealer ship as this particular one has a habit of buggering things up and missing the bleeding obvious.

Hasnt done it since but will see how it goes when I get back from work.

Hopefully it wont be a issue.

Alot of mechanics have no idea when it comes down to these certain types of faults, however it is very hard to diagnose somethin like this. Did they scan for fault codes on the ECU? as these use OBDII port for checking faults fast and easy! If no codes were loged in the ECU fault record, would highly dought it is an electrical type fault, seems very strange.

Was it a Ford Technician/Dealer?
