As the topic says, I'm losing me some power in my XF due to what feels and sounds like something slipping. My limited mechanical knowledge points me towards a belt slipping. They look a little old, and I'll be replacing them when I fix up the main block. But I'd like to know how to tighten the belts to help prevent any slippage at all. When I go to take off, she groans massively and shakes as something slips.
Could it be anything else, other than the belts ? Trying to flick the a*** out a few times last night caused it to come on heavy, and I watched my revs go right up and my speed start going down. Not cool when your car heaves and groans, only to do absolutely nothing. I really wanna know what the cause for this is and rectify it ASAP before I get any serious damage out of it. If I need to replace shit, then I'd like to know what as well, so I can replace it.
I originally thought it was the transmission being low on fluid, so I checked that. Its bonza. My brother's VU ute was having similar issues and he replaced his belt with a new one (actually it was one of the [Lost the word for it. Its the bit that makes contact with the belt to move it ] ... his original one broke) and he got his lovely power back.
Well, I've described the best I can what the problem is and feels like.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers muchly

Hehe, word of the day is Tensioner.
Anyways, a slipping belt wont be the cause for loss of power, but it is important to have it tensioned properly.

sounds like your clutch is on its way out mate

sounds more like a auto issue.
could be the timing needs adjusting or timing chain jumped a tooth if its done over 200,000 never been touched possable due for it.
how does it idle and rev out of gear? is there a flat spot.
usualy with timing rarely changes with being electrical and with no points.

Word of the day sounds good.
She seems to idle fine, and same goes for revving out of gear.
Thanks heaps for the troubleshooting, but its not over yet Where shall i look from here ? Will a tune-up/service on my trans do the trick ? Or will it require a recondition/replacement of little things inside ? I may be able to aquire another transmission to swap out with for cheap, as I do see a number of X series Falcons sitting in yards doing sod all. Some have simply been over used and met a pole or other car intimately.

ive seen quite a few of them laying arount tony's auto wreckers in midland and some almost mint ones in a wreckers in the industrial part (just by the industrial train tracks, not far off that really big half sphere shaped shed:P) cant give you exact address or directions or even business name because i just dont remember:P ive only been there the once and that was the first i had ever heard of it:P

Sweet, I'm just out of Midland, so its pretty local.
An idea I had in my ultimate quest to not spend money: Will the trans from my 1985 Skyline fit snugly enough into the Falcon ? There is nothing wrong with that trans, and i have one sitting in my parent's yard. If needs be I'd move the engine over but I'm not too keen on putting a Nissan engine in my Falcon. Already looking at stripping some electricals from it, so taking the trans would be fine, too.

No chance and you can find a trans for a an xf for next to nothing just about anywhere!
Xran- 03-08-2009
Yeah I would go with the trans as well.
A mate of mine had an XF at school and his would slip and vibrate like crazy from 50km/h if he put his foot down haha. Actually it felt like the diff was slipping teeth in that because the rear end would bounce everywhere.
He never got it fixed, he sold it to another mate of mine who then got hit head-on by a drunk driver (another guy we both went to school with). Lame cos it wouldn't have taken much...

Ya, been talking to Valo and he said that you guys have spoken of a few good places to get parts and the like. Seems imma need some new headlight fixtures, too. But thats for another day.
What range of series am I looking at that can fit into the XF ? I'm assuming the whole X series would be relatively interchangable. How about from the E series Falcon ? [Not that i can afford it, but] The B series ? Shit, if i can pick up the remains of a wrecked BA or BF for ubercheap, i'd rather one of them. haha. In which case i'd port the engine over to the XF as well. If its all there, why not ?
Xran- 03-09-2009
b-series engine into XF would be mint.
If you do it, get the complete setup - engine, box, wiring, ecu etc etc to make sure it all behaves itself. XR6t donks aren't that expensive anymore

If your talking engines and transmissions would go for ea multipoint eb series 1 non smartlock, only reason why is the contverting to the new ba xr6 motor with its extreamly expencive converting the wiring harness being theres one up friends workshop ef with ba 6 least $2000-3000 mark spent on wiring the electrics. not including fitting and the original cost of the engine.
least transmissions are cheap should get for under $100 for bw35/40 auto even ones from the efi zk and zl fit just have to swap the kickdown cable.
