Well I thought I'd make a start and take the alternator out.Turns out the bearing is OK.What happened was that the gilmer belt has split and a peice of it has got stuck in the tensioner bracket under the alternator out of sight. The belt has been rubbing on the cooling fan blades of the alternator bending a couple onto the face of the alternator. These bent blades rubbing was creating the squealing noise that led me to beleive the bearing was gone.I bent them back up straight and now it is just a matter of getting a new gilmer belt and it is done.
Guess Iv'e learnt that I have to keep a better eye on things like belt condition in the future.

The red line shows the bent blades rubbing on the alternator. You can also see the black rubber marks on the tip of the blades.

Gidday Foz,

I'm not to sure what belt you were running on the gilmer drive, but for my money you can't beat the Gates belts.

Normally the belts you get with the Gilmer kits are pretty ordinary and as usual are made in China.

The belt you need is as follows and is manufactured in the UK.

Gates Powergrip 390L.

Available from Superoo Ford spares in Armadale ( and various other go fast places ).

Other trick is to not over tension the belt.

Thanks mate. The belt was the original one that came with the pulleys.I'll chase up one of those good ones as I have to go to Superoo anyway.
Cheers.

Took the brake power booster out on the weekend.Been having trouble with inconsistant boost and haven't been able to track down why.I suspected the booster was leaking from a seal or something so decided to change it.I was going to get an exchange unit but decided to get mine reconditioned so that I can find out if it is in fact faulty.
Turns out the booster housing was cracked which is where the leak was.No wonder I couldn't find it.
Once the booster goes back in I will start looking into fitting a new fuel pressure regulator as I will then have a stable idle speed again. The leak in the booster was causing the idle to fluctuate heaps. wadesta/thumbsup.gif

Good to hear your getting it sorted mate! Will be good to see this thing running how it should!

Picked up the booster today so that is ready to go on this weekend.
I have decided to change the fuel pump as well now. Will be fitting a new Holley 150GPH billit base elsctric pump. This also comes with a reg.Going out to A1 to get it hopefully this week. wadesta/thumbsup.gif

I have gathered all the parts I need to hopefully get the car running sweet.I have the rebuilt booster. The Holley fuel pump and reg with all the fittings to install it.And I have a new Gilmer belt and a dual spring throttle return set up.The launch control in thr pic won't be going on yet as I have to design and fab an install kit for it. wadesta/thumbsup.gif

if that holley pump ever shits itself i can definatly recommend a magnafuel prostar 500 !! i had one of those holley pumps but it just a little on the light side for methanol the holley was a killer pump but hella quiet hey !.....magnafuel hella LOUD sounds like a jet engine down back kinda like the holley red/blues used to be wink.gif

dumbspark- 10-24-2008
oh by the way i love your car always wanted one and ones like yours are the reason behind that keep up the good work on that beast will ya !!! i love carby V8s ..........for some reason a built an XR8 instead i did remove the fuel injection two carbs are better than 8 injectors right ? tongue.gif ......
with your gilmer setup i would pull the alternator apart if its a procomp one and chuck a set of good bearings in there so you dont actually get seized bearings they are only little bearings and if they ARE cheapo ones the tension of the gilmer will really put a strain on them, im an auto spark mate and i have changed many a rear bracket on alternators that have had a gilmer put on em that have either seized the rear bearing or flogged the rear bracket because of rear bearing movement again keep up the good work and keep that car of your beautiful !!!

Looks like someone has some work to do this weekend! Just wondering how the launch control works?

dumbspark- 10-25-2008
lauch control/ anti roll/ line locker you can use it to hold your brakes off (putting it in backwards) or hold your brakes on (fitted as direction indicates) just stops the brake fluid either holding pressure on the calipers or holding it away from the calipers wink.gif .........the only real launch control is transbrake hold 1st and reverse together that way can bring engine speed up to where peak torque is and with the release of the control switch instantly releases reverse and away you go front wheels in the air and everything wadesta/face.gif

Well the new fuel pump is in and I have made a mounting bracket for the reg.The dual return spring set up is in.I did put the booster in but the piston fell back into the housing so I had to take it out again.I'll have to take it to the brake place and get it reset tomorrow.
The new pump is a bit bigger than the old one so I had to modify the mounting bracket. The reg mount took ages as it had to be exactly right due to the position of it.
I still have to remove the old fuel return line as it is not required for the new setup.
Hopefully it will be going again next weekend.
Heres a pic showing the difference in size of the the fuel pumps
